How to identify quality of quartz counter and surfaces

Quartz is a popular material for counters due to its low maintenance. Natural quartz is ground into dust after being mined. It will fuse with 7% resin and other auxiliary materials binders under intense heat and pressure to form a solid slab.

Quartz slab is improved in many ways after the man-made process. Its high density, scratch-resistant, stain resistance, corrosion resistance, and high-temperature resistance. It can be in direct contact with food. Quartz stone has been taking over the countertop and surface market from granite.

There are two factors that impacted quality of quartz. The quality of raw materials differs greatly. the quartz sand powder is divided into A, B, C, D four levels, price differences between the levels are very large. Second, the production equipment, quartz stone production press pressure should reach more than 50 tonnages, vacuum density to reach more than -99.8, and the density should reach more than 2.3g/cm³. The hardness should be more than 5 on the Mohs scale. These are key indicators of a scarless surface. The water absorption rate of quartz itself is 0.02% for high-quality quartz. In addition, the quartz stone plate should allow some bending capabilities. Bending strength should be more than 30Mpa, this is to prevent the material from cracking during fabrication.

  1. Use keys and other hard objects to scratch quartz stone. The main component is quartz sand and also known as silica. The hardness is basically second only to diamond. The key scrape will only have a line after scrubbing. Low-quality quartz stone containing calcium powder and other poor-quality materials with the key scrape will leave marks and white powder.
  2. Pour soy sauce on it for a few days will not bleed color and has no way to clean it. Poor quality quartz stone countertops 1 day on the color seepage.
